Are you looking for a few easy (and practical) ways to save on your auto insurance?
These days who isn’t, right.
After all, every dollar you get to keep in your pocket is a dollar you can use toward something else you really need… or want.
So how can you reduce your monthly auto insurance premiums without cutting back on coverage?
By following these tips.
Three tips to save on auto insurance
The first point you want to keep in mind is to not settle for basic insurance, or reduce the amount of coverage you already have in order to save a couple of bucks.
In both cases that amounts to being “penny wise and dollar foolish.”
After all, for most states basic insurance is the bare minimum legally allowing you to drive your car. However, it will not provide sufficient liability coverage should you end up in an accident.
So how can you realistically reduce your auto insurance premiums?
- contact an independent agent
- consider bundling your policies
- know your credit score
Consider an independent agent
After trading in my 4 year old SUV and leasing a new car my auto insurance company raised my yearly premium more than $1000.
And why did they raise my rates so high?
Who the hell knows. I called and asked them why they raised my rates since my only accident was a fender bender eight years ago and I hadn’t gotten a speeding ticket in more than 7 years.
Well, they really didn’t give me one.
So, I looked around and found a local insurance agent and gave him all my info, including the year, make and model of the new car. Turns out he was able to cut my insurance for both my wife and I by more than $800 bucks from the price it was BEFORE we got the new car.
If you do the math that’s a savings of more than $1800 per year!
My homeowners insurance was with the same company who insured our cars. They raised my homeowners policy the year before (by $500) — again for no apparent reason. Despite being a loyal customer for more than 10 years.
Now, by bundling my homeowners with my auto (again with the same local agent) he was able to reduce my premiums by more than $2300 per year. Needless to say I was thrilled. Plus, he found policy coverage mistakes with my homeowners insurance and made the necessary changes to ensure that my wife and I had the right coverage for our family.
The bottom line?
You don’t need to cut corners in order to cut costs.
Ask about available discounts
One way he was able to save us so much money was by finding additional premiums savings for things like good credit.
With insurance companies the cost of your policy is based on real (or perceived) risk.
And what you might not know is that many insurance companies with names you never heard of can offer you a LOT of options to save money, giving discounts for things like taking a driver training class or having smoke alarms in your home.
The fact is, there are so many options to help you save money that the only way to know if you qualify is by speaking with someone who can work with you, preferably someone local (there are discounts based on the zip code you live in, for example) rather than relying on a 800 number to help you get the best policy.
Does that make sense?
By following these tips we were able to save a ton of money each year, and I’m sure you’ll be able to do the same.
